Retailers

Why should retailers participate?

Retailers benefit, because they have an extra item to draw their customers attention to and have stronger arguments to sell (sometimes) more expensive household products. Retailers should also participate because

  1. they can provide better information to your clients. The energy labels on household appliances do not provide enough insight into the energy costs of current appliances.
  2. with the Energy Indicator, the retail business can to help governments and the community to achieve the intended EU energy efficiency targets by 2020.
  3. retailers can help consumers to make savings on their energy bills and therefore create a positive buyer-seller relationship.

Who is keeping an eye on whether supplier information on the energy consumption that is for calculating the annual running costs is correct?

The supplier and/or product manufacturer is responsible for providing the correct data through the EU energy label.

How often is the information updated?

Suppliers or retailers can add information on new products into the YAECI database at any point in time. The project database calculates the product running costs using the annual average costs of electricity that has been calculated with the support of experts for Malta.

Which shops in Malta are already collaborating on the Energy Indicator?

The list of participating retailers is available and updated on this website under the section “Participating Retailers”.

Are shops legally obliged to use the Energy Indicator?

No. Although energy labels for white goods are mandatory, it is not mandatory to state energy consumption costs of household appliances. However, given the importance of the annual electricity costs for consumers in order to make a better informed buying decision, the retail trade has launched this initiative in collaboration with suppliers, and independent organisations in a number of countries around the EU.
